The "Affordable Energy" Astroturf Scam: How National Socialists and Dark Money PACs Dropped $1.2M to Buy the Corporation Commission

Arizonans deserve to know who is behind the slick campaign ads hitting their mailboxes and television screens. Right now, a political committee calling itself “Arizonans for Affordable Energy PAC” is saturating the state with messaging claiming it wants to protect consumers and lower electric bills.

Do not be fooled by the focus-group-tested name. A quick look at campaign finance disclosures blows the lid off this astroturf front. This committee is not funded by everyday Arizona ratepayers trying to make ends meet. It is a massive, multi-million-dollar dark money conduit created to funnel national socialist cash and radical environmental mega-donations straight into electing the Democratic slate for the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC): Clara Pratte and Jonathon Hill.

The Half-Million-Dollar Socialist Lifeline: Working Families Party

The largest single contributor fueling this so-called "affordable energy" campaign is none other than the Working Families Party PAC, which wrote a staggering $500,000 check on October 1, 2026.

As we exposed in our previous report, the Working Families Party is a national political machine that serves as an organizing vehicle for Democratic Socialists. They push the exact same radical policies causing economic stagnation in cities like New York and San Francisco: punishing tax hikes, anti-business mandates, and green mandates designed to kill traditional energy sources.

Between 2020 and 2024, the WFP National PAC spent nearly $1 million meddling in Arizona races. Now, they are dropping half a million dollars into a single front committee to capture the regulatory board that oversees Arizona’s power grid. What part of a national socialist agenda has anything to do with making energy affordable for Arizona families?

Chispa AZ Injects Another $400,000 Dark Money Conduit

Just eight days after the Working Families Party dropped its cash, Chispa AZ PAC pumped an additional $400,000 into the exact same PAC.

This is the exact same Chispa AZ that has already dumped over $4.73 million into Arizona campaigns, operating as a financial pipeline for D.C.’s League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and coastal mega-donors based in New York and California. Chispa does not represent local energy needs. They exist to impose radical, arbitrary 100% intermittent energy mandates by 2035, policies that energy experts warn will strain the grid and trigger rolling blackouts and rate hikes.

The National Eco-Lobby: EDF Action Votes and Tech Billionaires

The outside money trail does not stop there. The committee took in a net $300,000 from EDF Action Votes, the political arm of the national Environmental Defense Fund based in Washington, D.C. and New York.

The individual donor list tells the same story. Among the receipts is a $20,000 contribution from Ning Mosberger-Tang, an ex-Google executive and Boulder, Colorado mega-donor known for pouring millions into national progressive causes and LCV front groups.

Out of more than $1.23 million collected by this committee, over 97% came directly from national socialist PACs, coastal dark money networks, and out-of-state mega-donors. Everyday Arizona utility ratepayers did not build this PAC. It was constructed in boardrooms in D.C., New York, and California.

The End Game: Capturing the Commission for Pratte and Hill

Why are national left-wing groups dumping seven figures into this race? Because Arizonans for Affordable Energy PAC is running independent expenditure campaigns to elect Democratic candidates Clara Pratte and Jonathon Hill while launching attacks against conservative regulators.

Pratte and Hill are already the direct beneficiaries of tens of thousands in direct dark money support from both WFP and Chispa. Now, this front group is providing an additional multi-million-dollar air cover campaign to drag them across the finish line.

The irony is thick enough to choke on. A PAC funded by the very eco-radicals and socialist organizations pushing to prematurely shutter baseload power plants and ban natural gas is calling itself "Arizonans for Affordable Energy". In reality, the policies favored by their donors are a guaranteed blueprint for skyrocketing utility bills and energy shortages.

Defending Arizona's Energy Future

The Arizona Corporation Commission is designed to be an independent regulatory shield that keeps rates affordable and ensures the lights stay on when Arizona families face 115-degree summers. It was never meant to be a political playground for coastal PACs and national socialist machines.

When an organization relies on out-of-state special interests for 97% of its cash, it serves outside masters, not Arizona ratepayers. We will continue to track the funding, name the donors, and expose the artificial astroturf groups trying to buy Arizona’s power grid from the outside.
