Grid Reality Check: Katie Hobbs Abandons the Green Dream to Secure a New Pipeline
It’s amazing how a looming election and a failing power grid can suddenly clear a liberal politician's vision.
For years, Governor Katie Hobbs and her progressive allies have lectured Arizonans about the glorious, fossil-fuel-free future that awaited us. Her administration’s Office of Resiliency was supposed to be the launching pad for radical green policies designed to appease the out-of-state dark money eco-lobbies, like the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and Chispa AZ, that poured millions into Arizona to get Democrats elected.
But fast forward to today, and reality has officially crashed Hobbs' green party.
Faced with skyrocketing utility bills and surging electricity demands from the state’s booming tech and data center sectors, Hobbs’ hand-picked Arizona Energy Promise Taskforce recently dropped a report pushing for an “all-of-the-above” energy mix. But Hobbs didn't just stop at a panel report. She just put her own signature on a massive betrayal of the radical green movement: a full-throated endorsement of Energy Transfer's 520-mile Desert Southwest Gas Pipeline.
The Radical Left Gets Burned
Let’s call this what it is: a massive, humiliating retreat for the progressive left, and the eco-lobby is completely losing its mind.
The Sierra Club immediately came out swinging, publicly slamming the Governor for backing a massive infrastructure project that will pump billions of cubic feet of natural gas straight from Texas into Arizona. For the climate activists who view any fossil fuel expansion as an "existential threat," Hobbs’ endorsement of a multi-billion-dollar gas line is a total slap in the face.
The very groups that spent dark money to independent-expenditure Hobbs into the Ninth Floor are now watching her lock Arizona into decades of traditional gas generation. Why? Because she knows her base's utopian energy fantasies would cause rolling blackouts across Maricopa County by mid-summer.
Pure Political Survival
The hypocrisy here is stifling. When conservative lawmakers introduce common-sense bills to protect Arizona’s energy reliability by supporting traditional power plants, Hobbs reaches for her veto pen, claiming she’s protecting the environment.
Yet, behind closed doors, she is cheering on a 48-inch diameter fossil fuel pipeline to feed the AI data center market.. Her own experts and economic advisers looked at the math and realized the "future" she’s been selling is a recipe for economic disaster. Arizona families are already being squeezed by record inflation. Hobbs knows that if the grid fails under her watch, no amount of out-of-state dark money will save her political career.
The Dark Money Dilemma
So, where does this leave the radical environmental PACs? They fund these candidates expecting total compliance. But when push comes to shove, even Katie Hobbs has to admit that Arizona cannot run on good intentions and solar panels alone.
Hobbs is trying to play both sides. She wants the green dark money to keep flowing into her campaign chest, but she’s forced to embrace massive natural gas projects just to keep the lights on.
Don't buy the act. This "all-of-the-above" pivot and pipeline endorsement isn't a genuine change of heart—it’s a panicked admission from the Governor that the liberal energy agenda is bad for Arizona.
